Helpful Word-Faith and Charismatic Apologetic Links

Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth....- Ephesians 6:14

Anyone who has done a search on the internet looking for an apologetical treatise on the Word of Faith message could probably affirm the fact that you will find a lot more negative than positive. In other words you will find a lot more attacks against this message than you will find people defending it. Thus below, I am listing some of the more positive links I have found in my months of internet searching.

The links below are primarily to sites that present some defense of the Word of Faith message or at least gives a more positive presentation of it. I also have some links that refute anti-charismatic and anti-revival teaching in general. I do not advocate or endorse everything said in all of these sites. I have made some comments on each of them, but good or bad check them out for yourself and form your own opinion.

I will try to keep this up to date but if anyone knows of any sites not listed here that offer a defense of the Word of Faith message  then please e-mail me at victoryword@yahoo.com. Also, if you find dead links on this page let me know that as well.

Finally, I have more articles on the homepage that defend both the Faith Movement and the continuation of the Charismata in our present day that you may not find in the links below.

God in a Box: The Sovereignty of God in Word of Faith Theology - An excellent book by Dr. Chad Marinelli of Word of Faith Answers which is "A Word of Faith and Full Gospel Apologetics Ministry." I have read this book (and some parts of it several times) and have truly enjoyed Chad's rebuttal of the false accusations made my opponents of the Faith Movement whose chief claims are that the movement denies God's sovereignty. Chad shows how the faith teachers promote a true biblical emphasis of God's sovereignty while refuting the distorted view taught by WoF critics. Check his web page for other helpful teachings as well.

Defending The Modern Faith Movement - Heath Jarvis. Brother Jarvis does a very good job of responding to some of the many internet critics of the faith message. Highly recommended reading.

Another Side of the Coin: The Excerpts - Excerpts from the book, Another Side of the Coin. This book is written by my friend, Gregg Huestis in order to refute the misinformation spread by Hendrik Hanegraaff's book, Christianity in Crisis. We say, move beyond the excerpts and purchase the whole book. You will be blessed and your faith will be restored.

Fifty Five Fatal Flaws Of Christianity In Crisis - This has to be one of the best responses to the book Christianity in Crisis that I have read anywhere, be it internet or otherwise. Doug Gilliland has done a superb job. For some strange reason Doug's page is no longer on the internet but I could not in all good conscience let this particular response to Christianity In Crisis go unread by those who could further benefit from this essay. I have decided to place this on my site giving full credit to it's authors and I have kept the copyright statement intact. I believe anyone that has read Hank Hanegraaf's popular book should read this refutation of it.

Also visit Tarek's homepage for other interesting news and information.

Defense of Faith - A webpage defending some aspects of faith teaching. Also, check out the homepage for more Bible teaching and practical Christian instructions.

4 Dishonest Statements in Christianity In Crisis! - A site by Michael Corner that is still under construction. So far Mike is able to show you how Hanegraaf has taken Hagin's words out of context and have actually twisted them. Naughty, naughty Hank. It would be best to have a copy of the book, Christianity In Crisis as you are reading the notes. Mike has made a valiant effort and I hope that he will find the time to show us more of those out of context quotes.

In Defense of Benny Hinn Ministries & the Supernatural Word of faith - A defense of Benny Hinn without making excuses for his mistakes.

Articles written by Ian B. Johnson from Christian-oneness.org

  • Letter to Dr. John MacArthur, Jr., regarding his book Charismatic Chaos - A very kind letter to MacArthur agreeing with some of MacArthur's points while kindly disagreeing with others. Also, Johnson defends some aspects of the Faith Movement. While agreeing with MacArthur that some things taught are wrong, Johnson points out that MacArthur indeed misrepresents the position of Faith Teachers.
  • Power for Evangelism and Traditional Limitations on Spiritual Gifts - A defense of the Charismata for Evangelism.

Articles and books by Dr. Jon Ruthven
Dr. Ruthven is the author of an excellent theological book on the gifts of the Spirit titled On the Cessation of the Charismata which is now avaialable online as a free download.

  • What's Right About the Faith Movement - Written by Regent University theologian Jon Ruthven for Ministries Today magazine. Ruthven is sympathetic towards the Word of Faith teachers although he is quick to state areas of the message he does not agree with. Good Article.

Gives an excellent exposition of Scriptures that you can use to refute the arguments of your cessationist friends. This article is in .pdf format and will require Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Copeland Ministries Respond - A response from Kenneth Copeland ministries to the Belfast Berean, one of the many "discernment" sites that speak against the Faith movement. I thought that this had been removed from their site since the link was broken and I had a note here saying that it was. However I recently received the following e-mail from David McAllister, "Dear Troy, Like your theology you site is riddle with errors ... No we have not removed it! It is still at our site. My deepest apologies to Dave for this. Well, at least the "discernment" ministries are finally taking notice of this site (hehehehehe). The response was not written by Copeland himself but from someone in his ministry. From this response you will see why Copeland himself does not respond to his critics, what he believes about God having "failed," The little "gods" teaching, and Jesus descent into hell.

The Word of Faith People: What Can They Teach the Rest of the Church? - An article by someone named Baruch. Baruch gives his history of passing through the Word of Faith and seems he is now with the Vineyard fellowship. However, Baruch has some very positive things to say about his Word of Faith experiences and shows what the rest of the church can learn from the men that God raised up in this movement. He also attempts to encourage WoF people to learn from the rest of the church.

Articles by James R. Spencer from Through The Maze Ministry
Rev. Spencer is the author of two excellent books, Heresy Hunters: Character Assassination in the Church and Bleeding Hearts and Propaganda: The Fall of Reason in the Church. Click here for my review of the books (or check out my review of them at Amazon.com).

  • Revisiting the Sins of the Great Awakening A reprint of one of Spencer's earlier newsletters in which he cautions Heresy Hunters about criticising the Word of Faith teachers.
  • Orthodoxy - Shows how people use the terms "orthodoxy" and "heresy" for their own purposes.
  • Huresy Hunters I - Part of an newsletter article by James Spencer at the height of the heresy hunter frenzy.
  • Heresy Hunters II - Part two of the series of teachings on this vital subject.
  • How jesus provides Hope - An excellent article on how the atonement provides our needs. Refutes Hanegraaf on some criticisms he made towards certain Faith Teachers.
  • James Spencer's book, Bleeding Hearts and Propaganda: the Fall of Reason in the Church is now online. This book thoroughly exposes the ungodly tactics of some so called "apologists" against the Faith Movement. Below are some relevent chapters that deal with attacks on the Faith Movement:
        1. Chapter Eight: Propaganda - Deals with how some "Pop-Apologists" have become vindictive in their cause to fight what they preceive as heresy.

        2. Chapter Nine: A Funny Thing Happened to Me on the Way to the Bookstore - Documents Hank Hanegraaf's vindictive attack against James Spencer.

        3. Chapter Ten: Into the Breach - More documented attacks by Hanegraaf against Spencer due to his first book, "Heresy Hunters: Character Assasination in the Church."

        4. Chapter Eleven: Does Kenneth Copeland Really Believe Jesus is Not God? - Sound evidence proving how Hanegraaf dishonestly quoted Copeland out of context. Shows the dishonest tactics of these heresy hunters.

        5. Chapter Twelve: Avoiding the Sins of the Great Awakening - Shows from cchurch history how heresy hunters have been known to quench the Spirit of God and how we can avoid this.

  • Speaking In Tongues - An excellent article which refutes some of the opposition on this subject.

The Mystery of the 3 Days and Nights - An essay by Gregory J. Bitgood offering an excellent defense of what has been labeled by the critics as the "Jesus Died Spiritually" (JDS) doctrine. Whether you agree with this teaching or not I highly recommend reading this essay. I believe that the author has been thorough and has presented his subject well.

My God! My God! Why? - Okay, the author of this article, Wil Pounds does not seem to be Charismatic or Word-Faith. Nevertheless, he does one of the best teachings on Matthew 27:46 that I have read coming from an evangelical perspective. This shows that even many evangelicals do not share the interpretation of Matthew 27:46 given by many of the critics of the Word-Faith movement. Though Wil may not be Charismatic, he does have some excellent sermons on his webpage that are worth reading.

Heresy Hunters - These are excerpts from a free downloadable book called Temple Builders by John Lucas. I believe John does an excellent job of addressing this problem. I may not be able to vouch for the rest of the book but I truly feel  that this article is well worth reading.

Articles by Pastor Joe McIntyre of Word of His Grace Fellowship and president of Kenyon's Gospel Publishing Society
Pastor Joe McIntyre is the author of an excellent book titled, E.W. Kenyon: The True Story. See my review of this book by clicking here.

  • Does God Have faith? - An answer to the critics on the teaching of "The God Kind of Faith."
  • Heresy - Some interesting insight as to how the heretic label seems to stick like superglue once someone has slapped it on you. Good read though the book is even better.

  • Jesus' Spiritual Death - A reply to the critics on the JDS controversy.

  • Where Did E.W. Kenyon Learn About Healing? - More truth concerning Kenyon's historical and doctrinal background.
  • How Did E.W. Kenyon Spend His Early Years? - An article written by Kenyon's late wife, Evva. This article refutes the lie that Kenyon spent his earlier years involved in metaphysical cults.

Articles by Reverend Jack Howell of Pentecostal Faith Assemblies

  • What Is Heresy? - Gives the reader an understanding of what heresy actually is and how the heresy hunters distort the true definition in order to fulfill their own agenda and promote their own theological biases.
  • Are We Little Gods? - More to add to the "little gods" controversy. A short but interesting apologetic for this teaching.
  • Did Jesus Suffer In Hell? - Like the above, this is another contribution to the "JDS" (Jesus Died Spiritually) teaching that is causing so much controversy.

Refutation of the article "Confused Charismatic Theology & the Dake's Bible" - by Leon Bible. Leon Bible's letter to Pastor Joseph Chambers who has written an article which misrepreents the views of Finis Dake, the author of the Dake's Annotated Reference Bible. Dake's Bible is widely used in the Charismatic Church and is a favorite among many in the Faith Movement. Leon's letter demonstrates how critics often misrepresent those that differ with them.

The Healing Promise: A Charismatic Response - by Graham Old. A refutation of a book titled, "The Healing Promise: Is it always God's will to heal?" by Richard Mayhue (who happens to be a companion of the popular cessationist, John MacArthur).

Healing and God's Sovereignty - by Bob Brassett. I thought I'd never see this on the web again but low and behold, I found it. This is an excellent article dealing with the subject of God's sovereignty and the issue of divine healing. Bob tears down the many myths that surround this area.

Answering Common Objections Against Divine Healing Healing - An excellent article by Dave Root that deals with many of the common objections that critics have against those who believe that it is God's will to heal all. Dave Root has other articles on his webpage and quite a bit of teaching on a most important subject that should be dear to all of us which is Evangelism. Click here for other articles.

Traditional Views and Various Objections against the Doctrine of Divine Healing answered. - Some excellent teaching from Mike Fackerell dealing with the traditional objections against divine healing. Mike refutes these objections and reexamines the "prooftexts" used by some to oppose the promises of divine healing. Click here for other excellent books and articles by Mike.

Popular Objections Against Divine Healing Answered - By Albert Benjamin Simpson. A chapter from Simpson's classic book The Gospel of Healing which is available online. Simpson is one of my heroes and does an excellent job in refuting cessationist claims against divine healing. Also essential reading for Word-Faith advocates is Simpson's polemic on the difference between his teaching and that of Christian Science (click Here to read).

Objections Overruled - From Preachalways. Provides some excellent answers to numerous objections to the truth of Divine Healing and faith teaching. The page does not have the best formatting but the information is still GREAT and is HIGHLY recommended reading. Go to the author's homepage for more teachings on the subject of divine healing and I encourage you to download his book, Healing For Windows. The book is a Windows help file that contains all of the great stuff on his web page. I have been blessed immensely from reading it.

A Scriptural and Practical Introduction to Divine Healing - From the Brothers For Christ webpage. Especially check out their section on Obstacles to Effective Divine Healing Ministry for an apologetic against some of the obstacles that prevent divine healing.

Jay Snell has written a book titled Healing for the Rest of Us. Two chapters that deal with some of the objections against the doctrine of divine healing are as follows:

        1. Chapter Three: - Why Your Body Has Already Been Redeemed From Sickness: Now, You Don't Have To Get Sick and Remain That Way. Includes an excellent apologetic that makes a case for Romans 8:11 as a divine healing promise for our bodies in the "here and now."

        2. Chapter Four: - Why Your Healing Was Included in The Death of Christ and How This Functions To Heal You Now. An apologetic for healing in the atonement.

Healing and Christ's Atonement - by David S. Miller. A very good article written in an apologetic style that deals with physical healing in the atonement. Deals with what Scripture teaches on the subject.

Anatomy of a Deception - by Jack Deere. Shows from history that the cessationist doctrine originated with experience (or a lack of it. This is the very thing cessationist accuse Charismatics of formulating doctrine from.

Should Christians Expect Miracles Today? - by Wayne Grudem. Refutes the cessationist position in a question and answer format. Wayne Grudem is a Reformed Theologian. The article is taken from “The Kingdom and the Power” (edited by Gary S. Greig and Kevin N. Springer) which is a collections of essays dealing with the miraculous for today (written primarily by Third Wave advocates). I found Grudem's article to be one of the best in the book and I am glad that it is online for others to read.

Power Evangelism - A small article dealing with the cessationist attacks by some pharasaical "ministries." The writer even mentions some displeasure he has with some attacks on the Word-Faith movement.

A Response To Charismatic Chaos - This is a paper is written by Vineyard pastor Rich Nathan. Rest assured that Nathan is not "pro WoF". He states, "I too have grave problems with the prosperity message and the positive confession movement." However, I include his position paper here because he does an outstanding job of refuting  author John McArthur and his book Charismatic Chaos. Charismatic Chaos is a book which ridicules Charismatics and attempts to prove that the gifts and miracles of our Lord are not for today (a view better known as "cessationism"). Nathan's disagreement with WoF is lmited to the one line quoted above so you need not worry about reading insults aimed at the movement. There are some other highly recommended position papers from the Vineyard fellowship that will show you just how some of our modern day "apologists" misrepresent the teachings of Charismatics and others they disagree with. Click here to read them.

Articles written by Regent University Professor J. Rodman Williams

  • Book Review of Rich Nathan's "Empowered Evangelicals" - Though Nathan is attempting to help Evangelicals embrace the Charismata, he undermines some aspects of Pentecostal beliefs and practices. Professor Williams refutes Nathan in these areas.

Articles written by David M. Burns, M. Div

  • When Did the Gifts of the Spirit Cease? - A Scriptural and theological refutation of cessationist theology. It is well worth reading.
  • Signs and Wonders in the Writings of the Church Fathers - Gives historical proof that signs and wonders did not cease in the first century of the church.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit - by Bob DeWaay. I probably don't agree with anything else that Deeway has written on his website but I certainly agree with this article which refutes the cessationist argument against the gifts.

The Theology of Miracles (Parts 1 and 2) - Two essays in .RTF format that can be downloaded and read through WordPad or most any other wordprocessor. The articles are written by Richard Lee of Elim Church. Mr. Lee does an excellent study showing how the Charismata is still needed in the church today. Also has some other interesting articles on his webpage. I cannot vouch totally for Mr. Lee's theology (especially in the area of "free-will theism" since I totally believe in man's free will) but most of the articles, especially the ones on miracles are well worth reading.

Greater works than these shall ye do... - An article by Ken Raggio dealing with the false teaching of cessationism from both a Biblical standpoint as well as the experience of the author. Well worth reading.

The Cessation of Cessation Theology - From Revival Times Webpage. Makes a case against the doctrine of cessationism (the belief that the miraculous is no longer for today).

Miracles Ceased? - by Vern Manson. Written by an advocate of Moral Government Theology. Whether one agrees with MGT or not I believe that the article is worth reading. In the article, the author first presents a brief article written by a cessationist and then he refutes the article. I again encourage you to read it.

Does The New Testament Teach That The Sign Gifts Have Now Ceased? - By Don Stewart. Refutes some of the common arguments brought by cessationists and addresses many of their prooftexts.

Gifts of the Spirit - Presents historical evidence that the miraculous gifts were not withdrawn from the church in the first century.

Articles by Ross A. Taylor and Alan Nairn of Revelation

  • Charismatic Chaos? Or Quenching The Spirit? - Although I don't agree with everything in this article, the writer brings up some very excellent points concerning cessationism. I believe the article is well worth reading.
  • The Spiritual Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Did They Cease When the Apostles Died?. Refutes the common cessationist argument that miracles ceased after the death of the last Apostle died.

Have the Gifts Stopped Being Given? - By Robert Longman. An excellent polemic against cessationism.

Modernists Attack Authenticity Of Mark 16: 9-20 - An outstanding article proving the authenticity of this passage of Scripture. Many will attempt to repudiate the miraculous for today by stating that Mark 16:9-20 was not in the original manuscripts. The author of the work on this link presents outstanding evidence that shows the fallacy of such arguments.

The Last Twelve Verses of Mark's Gospel - by Tim Greenwood. Tim does an excellent job of refuting the false claims of those who believe that Mark 16:9-20 were not in the original manuscripts. Faith building. Tim has many outstanding articles on his webpage. Click here to check them out. You will be glad that you did.

The Passage the Devil wanted out of Your Bible - by Mike Fackerell. Mike has one excellent webpage with many great reseources (click here to check out his page with many great books and articles). This article on Mark 16:15-20 is no exception. Mike deals with the evidence that proves that Mark 16:15-20 is indeed inspired Scripture and shows us that it is the devil that wants to remove it, not God.

The Critics of Revival: A Historical Perspective - by Dr. Michael Brown. Famous for his many writings and his stand against such notable revival critics such as Hank Hanegraaf and others, Michael Brown has written an interesting and enlightening article which shows that the the critics have always been and shall always be amongst us. A Gentleman's Response to Hank Hanegraaff - This essay provides a response by one of the most well respected pastors in England to Hanegraaf's book, Counterfeit Revival. Very good reading.

Deception Or Revival? - By Richard Carey of Victory Christian Fellowship. A good article dealing with the attacks from cessationists against the miraculous manifestations that occur during revivals.

Slain In The Spirit: Fact Or Fiction - An online book by Ezra Coppin which gives the SCRIPTURAL validity of being slain in the Spirit. It is an excellent book for those who are open to this but need more Scriptural verification.

The Charismatic Movement - Partially a response from a NonCharismatic Lutheran minister to an article in a magazine that misrepresented Charismatics. Though he is nonCharismatic, he cautions his readers against evaluating the movement on a prejudicial basis. He also admonishes those who use dishonesty in how they present the movement to others. Good article for both Charismatics and nonCharismatics alike.

What it means to be Wesleyan - A very short article from a Nazarene church webpage that reminds its readers that though the Nazarene church is not a part of the Charismatic movement, that they must remember that Charismatics are still their brothers in Christ. Its encouraging to see the openness that some are finally giving towards this movement.

Watchdogs - A site by Gil Howard Browne with a list of links refuting Hank Hanegraaf's book Counterfeit Revival. If you believe in the revivals that have been going forth then these articles might be worth your reading.

Speaking in Tongues: Are Tongues the Least of the Gifts? - An excerpt from a book I HIGHLY recommend titled Speaking in Other Tongues-A Scholarly Defense by Donald L. Barnett and Jeffrey P. McGregor (Can be purchased here). Excellent rebuttal of a common cessationist deception concerning tongues. Read the article and then purchase the book. You won't regret it.

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit (For Such A Time As This by Tom Audock. A good article refuting the anti-pentecostal argument against tongues for today.

Modern Pentecostal Controversies - an essay by Dr. Joseph B. Fuiten which refutes the position that some scholars have taken against receiving the baptism with the Holy Spirit subsequent to salvation. Dr. Fuiten draws from the writings of the church fathers to show that the Pentecostal position on the reception of the Holy Spirit has a long history throughout the church prior to the present day Pentecostal outpouring.

A Challenge Against the Cessation of Prophesy - By Craig Simonian. A good article that refutes the cessationists arguments that the gift of prophesy has ceased in the church. You may also enjoy his essay On the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Pentecostal Apologetics - A site by my friend, John Chopores giving a defense for tongues, divine healing, prosperity, the deity of Christ, etc. Updated link. John will be adding more and more stuff so check back often.

In Defense of Jabez - by Ron Brackin. The very popular book, "The Prayer of Jabez" written by Bruce Wilkinson has been under attack. Some such as Hank Hanegraaf and James Mulholland have written books for the very purpose of countering Wilkinson. Wilkinson's premise is that God still answers prayer and wants to bless His people in every area. This is the very thing under attack. Brackin answers Wilkinson's critics in this timely piece. You may also want to check out this short but sweet Book Review.
