I. What Are Tongues?

    1. It is a gift that is available to EVERY believer

        a. Mark 16:15-17

    2. The initial physical evidence of having received the baptism with the Holy Spirit.

        a. Acts 2:4; 10:44-46; 19:6.

    3. The Bible gives no other initial physical evidence other than tongues.

II. The Benefits Of Speaking In Tongues (Part 1)

     1. You receive a new prayer language - 1 Cor. 14:2, 14,15; Rom. 8:26, 27.

        a. Praying in the Spirit guarantees perfect prayer that is directed by the Holy Spirit; untouched by doubt and fear of the mind; and impossible for the devil to understand or hinder - D. Stewart.

    2. Your spirit man is edified and encouraged - 1 Cor. 14:4, Jude 20.

    3. Resisting The Devil - Eph. 6:10-12, 18.

III. The Benefits Of Speaking In Tongues (Part 2)

    1. Helps us to enter into God's perfect rest - Matt. 11:28; Heb. 4:3, 9, 10; Isa. 28:11-12.

    2. Giving God perfect thanks and praise - 1 Cor. 14:14-17; Acts 10:46.

    3. Enables us to operate in the gift of tongues and interpretation - 1 Cor. 14:5, 13.

    4. A sign to the unbeliever - 1 Cor. 14:22; Acts 2:11-12.

IV. Some Practical Things.

    1. Practice speaking in tongues to yourself at every opportunity (Car, shower, work, etc.) - 1 Cor. 14:18.

    2. If you have not received this wonderful gift, ask God - Luke 11:13.

    3. If you do not believe in this gift do not forbid anyone else to use it - 1 Cor. 14:39, 40.

CONCLUSION: The issue of tongues has been the greatest subject of controversy amongst Christian. This is still so today. This teaching seems to be the greatest area of attack by the devil more than any other doctrine in the Bible. This is so because in many cases, praying in other tongues is the gateway to much spiritual power.

We do not think less of those who do not believe in speaking in other tongues. There are many men and women who are being used of God that either do not believe that God does this today, or that some do and some don't. Regardless of opinion, the Bible makes it plain and simple that it is available today and that it is available to EVERY believer. Do not look down on those who DO NOT believe the way you do but rejoice in the blessing that you have received.
