Lesson Eleven: How To Study The Bible

I. Buy good study tools.

    1. Get yourself a concordance (Strong's reccomended), a good Bible dictionary, and a good commentary (F. B. Meyer Bible commentary reccomended).

    2. Set a scheduled time, keep a notebook, pen, and your study tools handy. Make this a daily habit - Matt. 4:4; Acts 17:11; Ps. 68:19.

    3. You can start off by studying a book (John is recommended for the new believer), a chapter, a passage, or use your concordance and study a subject.

II. Secrets of effective Bible Study (Part 1)

    1. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give you a revelation of His Word.

        a. Eph. 1:16-18; 6:17-18; John 14:26; 1 John 2:27; 2 Cor. 3:6.

    2. Personalize the Scripture

        a. Read God's Word as though it were a letter written to you personally. Personalize each promise as though God spoke it to you personally. Determine to obey and fulfill every command as though He were standing there ordering you.

III. Secrets of effective Bible Study (Part 2)

    1. Choose to believe every word literally

        a. 1 Thess. 2:13

        b. God is not a liar (Titus 1:1-2). He does not deceive. He means what He says. The Bible was written for man and in a language in which men are well able to understand it.

    2. When studying Bible people such as Abraham, Moses, Peter, etc. then see yourself in them. If they were successful then do what they did. In their failures, find out what caused it and avoid it.

        a. 1 Cor. 10:11

        b. Elijah - an example for us (James 5:14-18).

IV. Secrets of effective Bible Study (Part 3)

    1. Interpret all Old Testament Scripture in the light of the New Testament.

        a. Many have gone into bondage by not following this simple principle.

        b. Some good examples - 2 Sam. 24:1, 10; James 1:13; 1 Chron. 21:1; Matt. 4:1.

    2. Attend your church Bible studies. Take notes and study them.

        a. Eph. 4:8-13

    3. Endeavour to APPLY all that you study to your personal life.

        a. Josh. 1:8; Prov. 23:12; James 1:22-25; Luke 6:46-49; 2 Tim. 3:16.

CONCLUSION: There are many different books that teaches one how to study the Bible. There are many different ways and methods of Bible study. We do not claim to give the last word on the subject. However, we have found that many books that teach these methods are detailed and time exhaustive for one who needs to be fed the sincere milk of the Word right away. In this lesson we have endeavoured to present you with the simplest secrets for studying the Bible. With you and the Holy Spirit, Bible study can easily become a joy and not a chore.
